Museum of Reichenau
-World Heritage Isle of Reichenau with its famous monastery-

Visitors to the Museum of Reichenau can obtain information about the outstanding cultural and historical meaning of the Isle of Reichenau in three new sections.

Together with the three romanic churches the now totalling four museum buildings being situated just nearby do represent an “information network” concerning the world heritage of the “Isle of Reichenau with its famous monastery”. Combining the impressions of the different museum stations during a discovery tour across the Isle of Reichenau with the sightseeing of the historical buildings, this will render a good understanding of the “spirit of Reichenau”.

The largest of the new museum buildings near to the already existing museum part in the “Old Town Hall” makes the visitor nearly plunge into the middle ages. Among the exhibition themes being presented there are for example the building history of the cathedral St. Maria and Markus and the one of the monastery, the poetries of the monk Walahfrid Strabo, the so called St. Gallen monastery plan originated on the Isle of Reichenau, the works of the monk Hermann the Lame who had been active on scientific fields, and also the theme of the relic worship. A certain emphasis lays on the presentation of the Reichenau illumination.

The small museum buildings near to St. George and St. Peter and Paul illustrate the building history of the respective churches. Other themes are the famous mural paintings of the church of St. George or the “societas fraternitatis” (prayer fraternization).

The history of the citizens of the Isle of Reichenau is being depicted in the historical “Old Town Hall” which is one of the oldest half-timbered houses of southern Germany (12th/15th century).
