From the Wieskirche pilgrimage church in Pfaffenwinkel to the island of Reichenau This route begins in southern Bavaria with the rococo splendour of the Wieskirche pilgrimage church. Set on a small rise in the middle of a meadow ("Wiese" in German), the church can be seen from miles away.
The route to Lake Constance could hardly be more picturesque as it passes along the German Alpine Road via Füssen, where a visit to the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein Castle is well worth the detour. Then it's onwards through the heart of the Allgäu and the Allgäu Alps to Lindau on the edge of Lake Constance and then along the panoramic route by the lake to Meersburg.
From here, a ferry departs every 15 minutes for the Mainau peninsula. Then on to Reichenau island in Lake Constance. The journey to the island is an experience in itself. A poplar-lined causeway links the mainland to the island with the former monastery and the three famous churches dating back to the 9th/11th century.
