World Heritage and Cultural Diversity
The unesco Chair in Heritage Studies at Brandenburg University of Technology is pleased to host an International Conference on “World Heritage and Cultural Diversity – Challenges for University Education”. The event is being co-organised by the German Commission for unesco and is scheduled to take place in Cottbus from 23–25 October 2009.
The conference patrons are the unesco Word Heritage Centre and the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs Germany. The conference aims to discuss in which way the different aspects of cultural diversity can be protected by international legal instruments and how such instruments may achieve this. Another aim is to connect a broad understanding of diversity with existing and future World Heritage sites.

UNESCO World Heritage Germany on the ITB
This year again the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Germany e.V. will be present at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin. You can find us together with the German Centre for Tourism (DZT) in hall 12, booth 102. About 11,000 exhibitors from 180 countries will be expected at the fairground near the radio tower.This year’s official partner country of the ITB is the Dominican Republic.
On March 8 and 9, 2008, private visitors will get the opportunity to walk around the 26 halls and find out the latest trends around the topic travelling.

World Heritage by post
There is a special exhibition taking place in the roman castle of Saalburg in Bad Homburg v. d.H, up to August 3, 2008. Centre of the exhibition are objects as big as stamps. The exhibition is entitled “World Heritage by post – Limes and other UNESCO World Heritage Sites on stamps”.

Lübeck declaration
On June 14, 2007 the international conference “UNESCO World Heritage Sites within Europe – A Network for the cultural dialogue and Cultural Tourism” ended with the resolution of the “Lübeck declaration”. The conference had taken place on June 13 and 14, 2007 in Lübeck within the scope of the German Presidency of the European Council.

German Day of Reading Out

On Friday, November 23, 2007 the newspaper “Die Zeit” and the Foundation Reading are activating for the fourth time friends of books for the Germanwide Day of Reading Out within the scope of the initiative “We will read out for you”. The organisers appeal for reading out to children, maybe in kindergarden, in schools, in libraries or at home.

Event regarding the handling of large space retail sales with regard to
preservation of historical monuments
From November 14-16, 2007 there will be a conference in Göttingen dealing with the topic of handling large space retail sales areas and at the same time taking care of the preservation of historical monuments. The event is being organised by the work group urban development and preservation of historical monuments (which is part of the association of the country’s monument conservators) as well as the work group municipal preservation of historical monuments (being part of the association of German cities and towns) and the city of Göttingen itself.

Core of classic accessible again
Three years after the devastating fire night the Herzogin Anna Amalia Library in Weimar has been re-opened on October 24, 2007. At that time in 2004 approximately 50.000 books burned up totally, 62.000 were partly damaged to a large extent. 75% of the damaged books will be re-obtained again. But this will take many decades.

Regensburg celebrates its World Heritage!
In 2006 the ensemble “Old Town Regensburg with Stadtamhof” had been nominated part of the UNESCO World Heritage. On November 24, 2007 the official award of the World Heritage Certificate has taken place.

Vadim Repin Benefit in Aid of Bamberg World Heritage
This coming June two outstanding internationally known institutions will join up for an unusual event: Bamberg Old Town, listed by UNESCO World Heritage, and as a Franconian “Rome” on the river Regnitz displaying an exceptional townscape, and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra with the Bavarian State Philharmonic. This world famous orchestra is at home in Bamberg, and it travels the world as a cultural ambassador for Bavaria.
The benefit will take place on 23 June 2007 at 7pm in Bamberg Concert and Congress Hall, Joseph Keilberth Room, under the direction of their conductor Jonathan Nott, with the Russian violinist Vadim Repin in aid of Bamberg World Heritage Foundation.

German World Heritage Day 2007
The 3rd German World Heritage Day will take place on 3 June 2007, the first Sunday in June.
The centre of events will be located in the World Heritage Town of Goslar. This year’s theme will be “Living World Heritage”. The first World Heritage Day on 5 June, 2005, was initiated by the German UNESCO Commission and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Germany association.
Different activities will be scheduled in further World Heritage Towns. The programs will be published in time. World Heritage Day serves to familiarize a broad spectre of the public with UNESCO World Heritage, and to enhance identification with World Heritage Sites.
